Spose, the Maine-based rapper we all know and love, just announced an official release date for his much-anticipated third album, The Audacity!. That bad boy is coming out on April 17th 2012, and we are stoked to say the least.
After Spose parted ways with Universal/Republic Records in 2011, he returned to his birch bark desk in the woods of Maine to record and produce new material on his own. The record was finally mixed by Grammy-award nominated engineer Jon Wyman in February 2012 at Halo Productions in Windham, Maine, and is now ready for the public's ears. The lead singles “Knocking on Wood” and “Gee Willickers” — both produced by Spose — will hit iTunes on March 12th, 2012.
The Audacity! contains eleven brand-new songs, and musically the album breaks new ground both for Spose and hip-hop in general. Spose manages to masterfully blend his alternative rock and hip-hop influences into something simultaneously progressive and familiar. This record is Spose's first official release since his wildly successful single campaign with "I'm Awesome."
A new video for "Pop Song"
As a big middle finger to the greedy label executives, Spose also just released his own video for that infectious uppercut of a single, "Pop Song." The video was filmed in Los Angeles and directed by the same dude who directed the video for "I’m Awesome": Lucas Heyne. In the clip, Spose is unwillingly transformed into several pop stars — Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, etc. — by stylists and label executives intent on molding him a new persona and stripping him of his individuality.
Fun fact: MTV has already posted the video!
