Kyle Poissonnier is really, really excited. And he should be, because on July 12th, he is going to celebrate the official launch of his new company, Katalyst, with a massive party at the State Theatre featuring a virtual who’s who of Maine bands.
Dubbed the “State of the State,” by Will Mallett of the Mallett Brothers (because of the all-star lineup and the location), the concert is being co-sponsored by Baxter Brewing from Lewiston, who will be serving their signature beer cans at the event.
Mr. Poissonnier’s Katalyst brand is a mixture of apparel, fundraising, athletics, music, and events. While that might seem like a strange brew, upon hearing about his work with schools, athletes, and bands, you’ll quickly understand that what he is doing is smart, genuine, and very cool.
Referring to the inspiration for his brand’s name, Kyle said, “Everybody is a catalyst for something. Someone might go to a band’s show, and that might be the catalyst for them to pick up an instrument…if a kid buys a shirt from Marquice Cole of the Patriots (whom Kyle recently signed as his first Katalyst athlete)… and gets a chance to meet him, that might be the catalyst for him to become an athlete. Everyone is a catalyst for some sort of change.”
As to why he chose the particular bands and sponsors for the Katalyst show, Poissonnier basically said that they were all good friends, “I get in trouble sometimes… because I do a lot of what I like. If I had to put together a show that I wanted to see locally, at a venue that means a lot to me, well, I did that.”
Rustic Overtones: Returning to the State Theatre for the first time in ten years, the show is a sort of homecoming for the Portland-based alt. rockers. As one of the longest running and most successful local bands in recent history (2013 marks their 20th anniversary), they were a natural choice for headliners of this Maine-centric show.
The Mallett Brothers Band: Fresh off the release of their third full-length album, Land, the show will be their first ever at the State Theatre. Rumor has it that the country-rock powerhouse, well known for their raucous performances, will not be content to let Rustic be the loudest band of the night.
The Wrecking: A band with a heart, The Wrecking are becoming as celebrated for their charity work as they are for their infectious brand of pop/rock. The band has racked up more than 500 live appearances in the last three years, including an onscreen performance in the Showtime series, “The Big C.” They don’t make it back to Maine much these days, so having them at the show is a real treat.
Spose: Having recently released The Peter Sparker Mix Tape on his own P.Dank label, Spose is currently the undisputed king of Maine hip-hop. Upping the ante for this very special event, he will be joined by local funk/soul group Sly-Chi as his personal backing band.
The Other Bones: The electronic soul trio is quickly gaining attention for their powerful vocals and innovative use of technology. Guitarist Eric Bruce cited My Morning Jacket’s concert from 3 years ago, the first at the re-opened State Theatre, as one of the main reasons he relocated to Maine from NJ. “It’s coming full circle for me,” said Bruce, “We are all really humbled that we get to play [there]… it’s going to be a wild experience.”
Raina Davis Jensen Foundation: The State of the State is being presented in tribute to the memory of Raina Jensen, who was tragically lost to a drunk driver in 2010. In her life she worked to provide education and sports opportunities to children in Northern Fiji and was a huge fan of Rustic Overtones.
